This is Phil Fish

This dust up started around June 17th with the following video which currently has over 100k views:

The video says “This is Phil Fish” but actually it is a video.

Several prominent indies retweeted the video including @tha_rami (Nuclear Throne) and @mikeBithell (Volume) among others. Game journalists circulated the video as well Patrick Klepeck (Giant Bomb) tweeted the video and Ben Kuchera (Polygon) posted this article on Polygon. After the video got enough circulation, Phil Fish himself came out of twitter hiatus and tweeted roughly that he felt youtube streaming was a bad practice explaining that there are systems in place to stop you from streaming movies in their entirety, such systems should apply to games as well.

Phill’s return caused a brief twitter explosion in which everyone tweeted about a number of things from Phil’s fame to if he was right about youtubers. One streamer, @RockLeeSmile (Indie Impressions, and the Northern Lion Super Show) tweeted to Phil a short message to the effect of: hey man, lets be friends. In short, everyone didn’t know what to do in reaction to the shocker of Phil’s return. Within the hour, Phil removed his tweets about streaming and expressed some interest in being on twitter but that he really couldn’t. His account, @PHIL_FISH, no longer seems to exist.

The controversy is still unfolding as other indies are now writing opinion pieces about if the video is a fair portrayal of “indie fame.” Liz Ryerson (Problem Attic) wrote the following comparing Gurus like Phil to cultural discarded airplane hulls saying:

Indie Game: The Movie is the waste of a culture – and it would be easy just to leave its world and its narratives behind. but i think it’s more important than ever to go back and look at it in a slightly different, hopefully wiser light.

Liz Ryerson

The commentary train continues as Zach Gage wrote a post in reply which was literally too long to fit in the comment section of Liz’s blog. The Indie Game Guru will continue to keep you posted if this dust up continues to grow.
